You might appreciate this, Byron. My husband bought a car at the end of the summer. He went to the registry to get a temporary plate, and when the DMV guy handed it to him, my husband said, "Are you kidding?" The plate was ONEBALZ. No lie.

Thank you for subscribing to The Art of After 50--I'm swooning! I met you at the Worcester Public Library event last year (or two years ago?). The book I received was Big Gay Wedding. I just read it--and LOVED it.

HAHAHAHA this brings me so much joy!!! This week at the hospital Cafe I was ordering a coffee and the barista called me ma’am. And I told my mom maybe it’s because I’m pretty and my mom said “I’ve seen prettier“

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Our moms would've made excellent friends.

Just one last comment. I so appreciate your use of humor in this situation. When my mother had a devastating stroke, we always said if we weren’t laughing we’d be crying (and we still cried plenty). She lost her ability to speak, but she found ways to communicate. And there were rare days when the words flowed. Like the day I was doing her hair and make-up (she was known for her glam) and I told her she looked good. Then I asked her if I looked good, and she said, “Better than last time.” I still laugh at that. What the hell? 😂

I remember book signing across a concrete wall, cancer raging on both sides

I'm sitting in a coffee shop reading this and tearing up like crazy, thank you very much Byron. Those photos of you are heartbreakingly beautiful (especially the one of you in the rainbow hat). I too have had a scary brush with cancer, and your words bring a lot of my terror and worry back. Thank you as always for your perspective and wisdom --- it all lands. xx

Laura! Survivor! Have a latte for me. Appreciate the love. I still can’t believe that lady gave me that cap. Little victories all around and I wonder how many we don’t even recognize. Cheers friend

Latte brewing up as we speak! It's currently 11 degrees here in Madison so I'm all about the hot beverages. I love that you got the adorable cap from the nice woman --- and also a pat on the ass from your urologist (ha!). It's the little kindnesses that get us through, always.
